She's reported on sports for some of some of the most prominent media across the globe. It was a long time writing about sports for The Washington Post, including tennis, football and basketball. Nichols joined ESPN in 2004 and spent nine years there, earning two Emmy Awards. She also appeared on the most popular shows on ESPN such as SportsCenter as well as NFL Countdown. She was also one of the networks' Monday Night Football broadcasts as an on-line reporter. The next step was CNN as well as Turner Sports. Unguarded, a show that she produced and hosted, airs every week on CNN International. The show had over a billion viewers worldwide. At the time, Nichols reported on TNT's NBA broadcasts, including the playoffs, regular season, as well as All-Star teams. She also reported for TBS broadcasting golf and baseball broadcasts as well as Final Four broadcasts on CBS. This is only the second nomination in 42 years of the award for a female from the more than 200 nominees contenders.
